Paint Protection Film, known as PPF for short, is a thermoplastic urethane. It’s also known as a clear bra. It’s a clear coating that can stick to the paintwork of your car to protect it. When you apply enough heat it can wrap around the contour of your vehicle. The design of PPF is to protect the paintwork against stone chips, falling debris, dead bugs, tree sap etc. It's great for cars, vans, trucks, motorbikes and boats.
Very cheap PPFs sometimes turn yellow due to sun damage. Don’t buy cheap PPF, within 6 months you’ll regret it. If you don’t look after it correctly the film my turn yellow too. You should receive a care sheet when a company installs PPF. It’s important to follow these. I’ll start by saying that this discolouring doesn’t normally happen. You could have thousands of cars with no problems and then one show signs of yellowing, usually due to neglect. You can use a White Wall tyre to fix it (unless it’s just due to the film being cheap). This usually removes any yellowing.
TFR’s are not good for paint protection film and turns the film yellow. If you are having a service done on your car please ask them not to wash it after as they’ll usually use TFR’s. It’s important to tell your valet also as they may use TFR before washing it.
If you don’t look after your paint protection film very well it may show some surface scratches. You can usually restore this. Use a chemical restoration solution such as Isopropanol or try buffering it out. You can usually get it back to look like the day you bought it.
You can usually prevent this by regular waxing of the car. Even without wax it doesn’t normally happen. Red or yellow bug blood can often be a dye, so you can see why it would stain. Don’t worry though; the sun can bleach this out. How long it takes depends on the intensity of the sun and how long you expose the car to it.
