The instructions provided are general installation instructions. It is not possible to give every installation scenario in these instructions. If you need any further advice, please get in touch before starting the installation.

If you would like to print the instructions, you can download them from here.

You will require

  • A sharp knife with a snap-off blade
  • Hard rubber squeegee
  • Glass scraper
  • Spray bottle filled slip solution (slip solution is made using a mix of approx 1tsp of Johnson's baby shampoo per pint of cold water. This ratio should be adjusted depending on the conditions)
  • Lint-free cloth (doesn’t leave fibres behind)

Most of these tools are available in our online store, either individually or as ready-to-go installation kits.

The instructions

Preperation

1) Measure the window and cut the film slightly oversized.

2) Spray a fine mist of slip solution onto the glass.

3) Use a glass scraper to clean the glass thoroughly. This will remove any ingrained dirt and grease.

4) Spray the window again and use the squeegee to remove all water and any remaining dirt from the glass.

5) Using the lint-free cloth, dry around the edges of the glass.  Pay attention to the top as you squeegee so that contaminated water doesn’t drip down behind the film.

Respray the glass so there is a fine mist covering the entire panel. There should be no dry spots.

6) Remove the backing liner from the film and spray the sticky side with a fine mist of slip solution.  It’s very important not to spray too much water on the bubble-free version.

PRO TIP: You can remove the backing liner by getting someone to hold the film up for you.  If you don’t have any help, then you can put the film on a table while you remove the liner.

Installing the window film

7) Place the film onto the glass so that the sticky side goes onto the glass.

8) Use the squeegee to remove the water from behind the film, starting from the top.  Start from the centre and move outwards. Do not worry if you don’t remove all the water; this is just to keep the film in place for now.

9) Cut around the edges of the film, following the edges of your panels. You can use a trim guide to help cut the edges straight.

10) Spray the surface of the film with the slip solution again. Use the squeegee to remove all of the water from behind the film. Make sure you use a squeegee with a hard rubber edge and put enough pressure to squeegee all of the water from behind the film. Be careful not to put too much pressure on the glass and damage it. Make sure the squeegee edge will not scratch the film either.

You will need to work from the centre outwards, moving from top to bottom. Overlap each stroke and work slowly. Ensure all water has been removed from behind the film.  Go slow, otherwise you can skim over it and leave a thin layer of water behind, which may turn into a bubble.

PRO TIP: We recommend squeegeeing the window 2 or 3 times to ensure no water is left behind the film. If there is any water left behind, it will dry, and you will have bubbles in the film. This is an error that many people make, but it is very easily avoidable.  This won’t happen if you use the bubble-free version.

11) Dry around the edges of the film with a lint-free cloth so that no water drips behind the film. Also, dry the film's surface of any water residue.
